WHAT & WHY
ACCELERATE2030: CLEAN WATER AND SANITATION IN NIGERIA

The mission of Accelerate2030: Clean Water and Sanitation is to accelerate and scale the implementation of innovative solutions that contribute to the achievement of SDG 6, ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all by 2030.

The objectives of the program were:

  • Identify and support the scaling of high-impact and scale-ready solutions by WASH entrepreneurs

  • Facilitate connections to catalyse collaborations and partnerships that accelerate the scaling of solutions towards SDG 6

  • Strengthen the capacity of SME support ecosystem in the water and sanitation sector in developing and emerging markets

For the SDG6 thematic focused approach, Accelerate2030 have been teaming up with Waterpreneurs, the initiators and organizers of the “Innovate 4 Water” marketplaces forum.

The marketplace in Lagos brought together diverse water stakeholders (e.g. entrepreneurs, investors, large and small companies, ICT companies, agribusiness sector, non-governmental organizations, UN agencies, incubators) that are contributing toward the achievement of United Nations Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) 6: Clean water and sanitation for all people.

EVENT OBJECTIVES

The marketplace forum was a concept curated for the following reasons;

  • Create visibility for entrepreneurs in the water, sanitation and hygiene sector (including MHM) so they can connect with impact investors, to secure capital and enhance their own capacity and networks in the sector.

  • A strong reinforcement of the local ecosystems around WASH entrepreneurship: Provide an opportunity to organisations to present their needs and/or current projects (impact funds, coalitions, innovative public/private models, new financial vehicles) to potential demand-side and service providers (social entrepreneurs, water and technology experts, etc), as well as to partners and current and prospective investors.

  • New business partnerships between entrepreneurs, investors, utilities and enablers: Match-make all water and sanitation stakeholders (water and sanitation entrepreneurs, investors, NGOs, donor agencies) in order to create sustainable collaborations that adopt innovative technology and thinking to combat the threat of climate change in the water and sanitation sector.

SEQUENCE AND ORGANIZATION

The format of the event was a marketplace forum accommodating 50+ people. The setup was dynamic enough to foster meaningful interactions between participants. There was mainly be short pitches and networking discussions.

  • The forum featured selected organisations working in the "Water Nexus" sector, impact investing, social entrepreneurship and UN agencies. A large segment of the forum will be dedicated to organizations presenting their water technology needs to potential providers, partners and investors.

  • There was several sessions covering relevant topics in an interactive format composed of two elements:

    • Public and private organisations pitching their needs and/or projects (5 min / pitches)

    • Networking & B2B sessions

The main objective of the marketplace forum was to aid in closing the SDG6 gap by focusing on scaling-up the impact of smart, for-profit social enterprises/ solutions providers, and by providing those enterprises with opportunities to network not only with impact investors but also with a range of organisations such as water utilities, government agencies, and development banks. The forums was designed to provoke major systemic change and to consolidate investment ecosystems in the shortest possible time.

Participants were curated to bring value to each other. The format was based on ALL participants being active, through a series of short pitches in which all participants had the opportunity to present their activities in order to gain visibility with other stakeholders of the sector as well as increase collaboration and business opportunities.

To do so, we provided the opportunity to all participants (entrepreneurs, corporations, investors, enablers…) to:

  1. Pitch their activity in a short pitch format in front of the full audience

  2. Have a small exhibition space available within a marketplace to display flyers, prototypes or a roll-up banner

PROGRAMME
CO-ORGANIZING PARTNERS

Accelerate2030 is a multi-stakeholder program co-initiated by Impact Hub and UNDP in 2016, with the mission to scale the impact of entrepreneurial solutions for the SDGs. The program has to-date been implemented in 19 developing and emerging economies across Africa, Asia, Latin America and Eastern Europe, reaching 1 Mil people and more than 500 entrepreneurs, and engaging around 50 partners globally.

Within this time, the programme has brought together numerous entrepreneurs, investors, UN agencies, multinationals, consultancies, local authorities and other stakeholders around a common mission of addressing the SDGs through entrepreneurial solutions.

Waterpreneurs is a global “for-impact organization” supporting the scaling-up of impact investments financing the growth of water and sanitation (WASH) enterprises operating in developing countries, and respecting human rights.

Waterpreneurs fosters interactions between global players from the private sector, the public sector and from civil society to direct finance toward impact projects in the communities, with the main objective to foster local ecosystem consolidation. Waterpreneurs has created the Marketplace forum “Innovate 4 Water”. “Innovate 4 Water” Marketplace forum is not a conference. It is a dynamic and interactive Marketplace forum where entrepreneurs, investors and enablers meet and thrive.
